Paul,
Have you tried Ride in railways? There driving truck isn't to expensive and also gives a good ride.

Can you make one?
What does it need to do? How long does it need to last and what type of track will it run on?
Can you adapt anything around you? If you have the money then go and buy one, much quicker than making one. If not...
For many years we had a driving truck made up from plywood with the wheels running in oilite bearings pressed directly in to the wood. It had no springing (hence the sore b*m in our railways name). Lack of any form of paint or maintenance meant it ended it's days rotting through but it lasted 3 years of intensive use and about another 5 of being pushed up and down by various neighbours, grandchildren etc.
Brakes were by putting your feet down and wheels were pinned to ordinary 1/2" MS axles.
A more sophisticated unit was made with brakes from a bike acting on a 1/2" thick disc welded to the axle.

Intresting.....
I will need to consider my options although I am still tempted by a RoR truck. Mind you there are always trucks appearing on second hand websites.
I will report back once I have made my mind up
Thanks for the info
